{"id":186,"date":"2014-05-07T20:09:42","date_gmt":"2014-05-07T20:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nashvillerecovers.org\/?p=80"},"modified":"2014-05-07T20:09:42","modified_gmt":"2014-05-07T20:09:42","slug":"rehab-to-add-controversial-electronic-umbilical-cord","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nashvilleprevention.org\/nashville_recovers\/2014\/05\/07\/rehab-to-add-controversial-electronic-umbilical-cord\/","title":{"rendered":"Rehab to add controversial \u201celectronic umbilical cord\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I think of my time as a patient at Cumberland Heights, I think of peace and serenity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And then there was that one day in group when everything blew up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All the male patients were in the main meeting room, about 75 or 80 of us. And the clinical associate \u2014 kind of a camp counselor at rehab \u2014 put a big number 5 on the board and a big 95 below that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He stared at us, somewhat menacingly, before turning to the board and pointing at the 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOnly five percent of you will stay clean and sober when you get out of here. Five percent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He jabbed a finger at the 95.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThat means most of you will be drinking or using drugs within a few weeks of you gettin\u2019 outta here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That\u2019s when the room exploded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was, pardon the pun, a sobering stat \u2013 and one that some of the guys just didn\u2019t want to hear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThat\u2019s bullshit!\u201d one patient said. \u201cYou\u2019re just trying to scare us!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cF*&amp;$ you!\u201d another shouted. \u201cSo you tell us all this recovery crap and then tell us we\u2019re gonna fail anyway?! Eat shit!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/texting.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4023\" align=\"left\" style=\"padding:5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/texting.jpg\" alt=\"texting\" width=\"288\" height=\"175\" \/><\/span><\/a>Two other patients actually jumped out of their seats and bolted while the clinical associates waved their arms, trying to get control of the room again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I\u2019ve written in this blog about that relapse rate being so high, about the insidiousness of addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now, Cumberland Heights is launching a new tech-based program to chip away at that 95% \u2014 and it has detractors before it even launches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The program is called Recovery Connection, and it gives an iTouch-like device to patients to carry for a year after they leave Cumberland Heights, an \u201celectronic umbilical cord\u201d between patient and treatment center, program director Sean Harrell says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Patients would get these devices early on when they get to treatment. Each day, patients will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #666666;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Enter what they got out of morning meditation;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Enter which meeting they plan to attend and then enter afterward what they got out of that meeting;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Enter some accountability at the end of the day in terms of what they could\u2019ve done better or what amends or apologies they might owe.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When patients leave, they take the devices with them or they equip their own smart phones with the technology to keep the electronic check-ins going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Patients would sign releases that would give access to what they enter in their recovery \u201capp\u201d to Cumberland Heights staffer \u2013 and maybe a sponsor and recovery buddies and a therapist or psychologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cumberland-Height-arch.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4025\" align=\"right\" style=\"padding:5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Cumberland-Height-arch-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"SAMSUNG CSC\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/span><\/a>And the Cumberland Heights staffer \u2013 which will be Sean Harrell at first \u2013 would monitor what the former patient has entered, at least once a week or so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The idea is to catch a former patient when he or she starts to struggle. Miss meetings for more than three days and you\u2019ll get a call from Sean. The electronic program is also set to detect certain phrases or language \u2013 \u201cF*&amp; it\u201d, etc. \u2013 that would alert Cumberland Heights monitors right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No matter what\u2019s entered, a staffer would call at least once a week to check in on former patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And the program could also electronically connect the former patient with other former patients so that they could build a support network that way as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recovery Connection is set to start with young men, 25 and under, at first. The thought is that young folks are all up in their Facebook and Twitter and SnapChat and what not, so they\u2019re used to staying connected through technology anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/iphone.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4030\" style=\"padding:5px;\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/iphone-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"iphone\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/span><\/a>But many former 20-something Cumberland Heights patients I talked to think that this \u201celectronic umbilical cord\u201d is a bad idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSomething like this to me feels like a babysitting situation,\u201d said one 25-year-old who asked not to be identified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIf you take a young person and put them in a program where they feel like they\u2019re monitored, they\u2019re less likely to succeed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tiffany, 24, agrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019m young but I\u2019m an adult,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t need someone telling me I need to check in. I think that\u2019s ridiculous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMe checking in on a tablet isn\u2019t gonna keep me clean. Meetings will keep me clean.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nick, 24, who has two years clean, says he relapsed when he left Cumberland Heights, and no device would have prevented that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI would\u2019ve sold it for drugs,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Still, others say they\u2019re intrigued by the idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe part that\u2019s really good is the accountability. Any type of journaling is good,\u201d says 24-year-old Pat Z., a Cumberland Heights grad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019m not gonna say 100 percent are gonna use it, but for those who are serious about recovery, yes, it\u2019s good to be connected,\u201d Pat said. \u201cLike anything else, it\u2019s an aid. I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll make or break someone\u2019s recovery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sean, the Recovery Connection director, says he gets the skepticism; he himself had his doubts when first approached about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But, he says, \u201cthe electronic device is just a tool. The coaching component is where it\u2019s at, that weekly tune-up with a professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe first thing everyone says is there\u2019s no way a computer can do it.
