Take away the drugs and alcohol, and often, especially in early recovery, we are reaching for anything else to change the way we feel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At a minimum, this is a distraction, taking our attention away from treatment and putting it on that cute girl or cute guy who\u2019s in treatment with us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What happens when one or the other person suddenly ends that relationship?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At its most dangerous, sexual liaisons in early recovery can trigger all sorts of strong feelings, obsessions and compulsions and self-loathing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cHaving been around so many treatment centers, I know there\u2019s 13th\u00a0stepping, and that often starts in detox,\u201d says Dr. Samuel A. MacMaster, a professor for the social work graduate school for UT Nashville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And this is why we\u2019re seeing more and more separation of the genders in treatment. Cumberland Heights ended co-ed groups on campus several years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And there are more and more single-gender treatment centers, like Discovery Place in Burns, Tenn., and Stillwaters in Lobelville, Tenn., for the fellers. For the women, there\u2019s Mending Hearts and Renewal House, both in Nashville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The latest women-only treatment center is set to open this week or next in Murfreesboro, Tenn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s called Voyage, and it\u2019s designed for young women, 18-35, who come in with other addictions as well. Voyage treats the substance abuse first, but also deals with patients\u2019 struggles with food, relationships, trauma, depression, anxiety and other areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Voyage-bedroom.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-4112\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Voyage-bedroom.jpg\" alt=\"Voyage bedroom\" width=\"410\" height=\"307\" style=\"padding:5px;\" align=\"left\" \/><\/span><\/a>Right now, the 5,000-square-foot house has eight beds (two to a room) \u2013 and there will be eight full-time staffers (mostly women) attending to those eight women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The cost is $19,500 for 30 days, says Patrick Dunn, chief of operations and development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That\u2019s right around the $21,000 that Cumberland Heights charges, and about half of the average rate charged by The Ranch in Nunnelly, Tenn., which also treats \u201cco-occurring\u201d disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll target the same population as The Ranch,\u201d well, at least the young women who might go to The Ranch, Dunn says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cYounger women need, deserve their own population, without distractions, where it\u2019s safe,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The patients at Voyage also will have at least four individual sessions with therapists a week, where most of the bigger treatment centers have only one, if any, Dunn said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And Voyage will have a holistic approach that incorporates wellness, physical fitness, art and music therapy, nutrition, horse riding, yoga and \u201clife skills.\u201d The women will learn how to shop for nutritious food and cook their own meals each day, Dunn said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shauna Bryan, chief marketing manager and a fitness expert, says, \u201cWe feel strongly that when we\u00a0treat the whole person and address the underlying issues and mental health\u00a0diagnosis, it gives\u00a0the client\u00a0a much better chance at a productive life of recovery, substance free.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And let\u2019s not forget that the kids these days love technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most treatment centers strip patients of all cell phones, computers, laptops and hand-held devices at check in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But Voyage will be giving their young women patients iPads so they can keep, electronically, a daily recovery log and have access to other apps and electronic aids to recovery, Bryan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">More info can be found at http:\/\/www.voyagejourneypure.com.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Voyage-property.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-4113\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Voyage-property-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Voyage property\" width=\"438\" height=\"328\" style=\"padding:5px;\" align=\"right\" \/><\/span><\/a>MacMaster and Dunn, both recovering addicts who have formed the company JourneyPure, also plan to open at 65-bed facility along riverfront property (pictured here) just north of Murfreesboro sometime next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Both genders will be welcomed \u2013 in single-gender houses with 10-12 patients each.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The yet-to-be-named treatment center will also be for folks with co-occurring disorders and will also be guided by holistic principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">More on that later.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mention \u201c13th\u00a0stepping\u201d to people in recovery, and we giggle or get uncomfortable really fast.
