More and more people in recovery are doing online meetings, online fellowship, creating online communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For a closer look, I\u2019ve asked Nashville professional and recovering alcoholic Cynthia M. share her experience with what she calls \u201cmy digital recovery.\u201d Cynthia?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I knew I had a problem with alcohol when I was in my 20s.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>People who are normal drinkers don\u2019t obsess over \u201cAre you an alcoholic?\u201d quizzes in women\u2019s magazines. (There were also the blackouts that started at age 17 my freshman year in college, but I was really good at ignoring those.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I remember one crying jag when I was about 25. \u201cI have got to stop this. I have got to get this under control,\u201d I wailed. \u201cOh, c\u2019mon, you always think you are an alcoholic when you\u2019re drunk,\u201d my friend told me.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Huh?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Fast-forward another 25 years and the obsession over the alcoholism quizzes had gone digital. Glass of wine by my side, alone in the middle of the night, Google was my friend.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/online.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4188\" style=\"padding: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/online-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"special keyboard - help\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" align=\"left\" \/><\/span><\/a>\u201cWomen AND alcoholism\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cAm I an alcoholic?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cWomen AND addiction\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cSigns of alcoholism\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cWomen and sobriety\u201d<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Bingo! I finally found what I was looking for \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.womenforsobriety.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">www.womenforsobriety.org<\/span><\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Women for Sobriety is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping women overcome alcoholism and other addictions. Instead of the well-known 12-steps, WFS is based on 13 \u201cacceptance statements\u201d (http:\/\/womenforsobriety.org\/beta2\/new-life-program\/13-affirmations\/)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>A companion online community,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.womenforsobrietyonline.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">www.womenforsobrietyonline.com<\/span><\/a>, has been my lifeline during nearly two years of recovery. In some parts of the country, face-to-face meetings are available, though not in Nashville yet.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/women-for-sobriety.png\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4190 size-full\" style=\"padding: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/women-for-sobriety.png\" alt=\"women for sobriety\" width=\"300\" height=\"109\" align=\"right\" \/><\/span><\/a>It took many more months and a very scary crisis for me to accept that I am an alcoholic. I had spent three decades trying to make rational sense of my drinking. When I took drinking completely off the table and accepted that \u201cmoderation\u201d was impossible for me,\u00a0<strong>everything<\/strong>\u00a0fell into place. Before, nothing made sense. In the context that I\u2019m an alcoholic, it all made sense.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I credit my recovery to WFS, 14 months of individual work with a fantastic therapist, developing a mindfulness meditation practice, and the support I have found in my online community of sober sisters.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>On my laptop, tablet and phone, in the privacy, comfort and convenience of my own home (or coffee shop, my office, the ladies\u2019 room), I can connect 24\/7 with women around the world who share my challenges, fears, and hopes for a sober future.\u00a0 I have the site bookmarked on my iPhone \u2013 it\u2019s like a meeting in my pocket. In fact, we often post \u201cjump in my pocket\u201d when we need prayers and support because of some stressor in our lives.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Every morning, I join women around the world online to make our \u201cdaily pledge\u201d to protect our sobriety that day and virtually join hands in support of one another. Twice a day, trained moderators who are sober sisters host online chats with structured conversation. The chat room is available 24\/7 for those who need support in the moment.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>All day and night, every day and night, women post their fears, questions, challenges, and successes. We rejoice when we celebrate sober milestones and support and encourage when we struggle. We mourn together when, on occasion, we lose a sister to this deadly disease.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I don\u2019t knock traditional 12-step programs, and neither does WFS. They have helped countless people achieve sobriety. WFS worked for me because it is women-centric and it is rooted in empowerment. \u00a0The first acceptance statement is this:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>I have a life-threatening problem that once had me. I now take charge of my life and my disease. I accept the responsibility.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I don\u2019t believe I am powerless over alcohol \u2013\u00a0<strong>so long as I don\u2019t take that first drink.<\/strong>\u00a0I retain that power by focusing on my own self-care and using the tools that my therapy and WFS have given me.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>We have a saying on the online boards: \u201cNo woman finds herself here by accident.\u201d Those who don\u2019t have a drinking problem don\u2019t Google \u201cwomen and sobriety.\u201d They just don\u2019t.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>I encourage any woman who is seeking relief for the pain of addiction to check us out. You will find women across the United States and worldwide who will \u201cget you,\u201d support you and love you in your journey to your better sober self.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Very interesting, and thank you for sharing, Cynthia.
